Pianos and weather

Over the past week or so, the temperature in Sydney fluctuated quite a bit with some days being rather oppressively hot, and then suddenly you get hit with a cold chill. Now, the mercury looks like its on the rise again.

All of this is not doing my piano much good.

Since I haven’t tinkled the ivories for quite some time, I thought it might be a good idea to jump on the keys and nut out some Mozart. As soon as the first bar or so came out, I stopped playing and gave up.

The piano was out of tune.

Now I’m going to have to figure out how I’m going to tune it. I could hire someone to come and do it, but that doesn’t seem as fun as doing it yourself. Too bad I don’t have those rubber wedges and tuning arm things…

Later, dude…

There is no better reminder of one’s mortality than the sudden death of somebody close to you…

Police rang up this morning to inform us of the death of one of my teammates. Our whole team was pretty much shocked when we heard the news. Having worked quite closely with him over the past month (we were paired up on the same task) and spending much time getting to know him in a social context, his passing is something that is very difficult for me to deal with.

Dude, you’ve been a blast to work with, and who can forget your DDR madskillz? It’s sad to see you go at such a young age, and you’ll be missed by all of us from your team and lunch group. My thoughts and sympathies go to your family and friends during this difficult time.

More photos up!

It’s been a while since my last post… been pretty much busy with work and a bunch of other things. Thankfully, I got some time to de-stress when Shu and I went on a photoshooting trip last Saturday night in the city. Shu got to try out his new rangefinder camera and I got a bit of practice trying to produce some panoramic scenes.

On a related note, I bought the tank lens. This 1.6kg beast is built like a tank and feels like a tank. It takes superb quality photos in low light thanks to its 3-stop IS to help against camera shake, and also because it’s pretty damn fast at f/2.8. Now, it’s time to start saving again and give my poor wallet some time to recover…

Twins…?

Did anybody watch Insight on SBS this evening? The topic of discussion was about twins, and there were many pairs of twins in the studio audience commenting on their experiences as twins. Some wanted to remain the same, others wanted to be as different as possible. There was also considerable discussion about the contribution that twin research has about our understanding of the differential contribution of genes and the environment on a variety of different things, such as illnesses, preferences and behaviours.

‘Take my life’ - debut album from Garage Hymnal

That great music that you may hear at Evangelical Union Annual conference every year - it comes from members of a band called ‘Garage Hymnal’. They’ve recently signed up to Emu music and they have a new album - ‘Take my life’. You can listen to sample tracks at emu.mu! The lyrics are great, the music is fresh and contemporary, and they’ve done some different arrangements of ‘Christ Alone’ and ‘See Him Coming’. It’s got a mixture of congregational songs and more personal, reflective songs. Sing them at your church, with your brothers and sisters in Christ or by yourself to the Lord.

You can also check out their website, www.garagehymnal.com to get the latest news about where they’ll be playing. Anyway, check out their latest cd and get a hold of the sheet music and backing tracks :)
