Food Review: Ice Cube
We went to try out this restaurant about 3 months ago. I think it was in ‘celebration’ of our 2 years of being together. We were looking for restaurants around Darling Harbour when I saw that there was a new place in the 2007-2008 entertainment book called Ice Cube. After some hesitation (reading some of those eatability reviews) we decided to go ahead and try it. Very very filling if you ask me…
If you know Keith and I, we eat a lot! We pondered over the menu for a long time, the mains just didn’t seem worth it. So, we decided to go for the seafood platter for two ($100 with voucher. It was certainly very large, it had fish, heaps of prawns (Keith probably just got full on prawns, sorry!), oysters, mussels, octopus, crab, lobster, calamari, and a ton of chips which we left half of at the end. The waiter who took our plate away looked shocked, smiled and asked us if we wanted to have anything else…
So, here’s the rundown:
Food: 7/10 It was very filling, and there was certainly a lot of variety. I guess because I haven’t eaten too many seafood platter’s in my time it was just exciting to see so much food. Probably could have given us less chips!
Atmosphere: 8/10 I liked it, the funky lights and the decor was very nice, but there weren’t a lot of people that night. Perhaps on the weekend it would have been more busier, I think we went on a Tuesday evening.
Service: 6/10 The waiters were certainly very friendly, dressed very well and explained things to us, but at the same time I just got a feeling that they were a bit clumsy. The tables had this sheet of white paper on top, held together with those metal table cloth holders. Keith and I stopped counting how many times they dropped these, it must have been at least a dozen times. We also heard either a glass fall or plates clash together maybe 3 times. They were all men, except for the lady at the front who takes you to your table.
Cost: 6/10 If we hadn’t had the voucher it would have been $130 bucks…hmm I think that’s still a bit dear for a worker, I don’t know. But, according to Keith, it is no sacrifice for a guy wanting to impress a girl on their first date. You see, there was this young couple (maybe early 20s?) behind me somewhere that Keith was eyeing throughout the night. They had also ordered a seafood platter and together we were analysing them (hahahaha). Judging by how they behaved towards each other and how they dressed, Keith felt that this was probably their first date, and that the guy was probably rich. They left about 1/2 their seafood platter uneaten - the girl had not eaten much. But, as Keith surmised, it was probably no big sacrifice for the guy if he had succeeded in impressing this girl…
I disagree.
You use a seafood platter to impress a guy.
Girls don’t get impressed with large portions of food.

I don’t think the guy was trying to impress the girl by showing off his prodigious gastronomical prowess (or rather, the lack of, as evident in the pitiful amount of the platter actually consumed).
I think it was more like impressing the girl by blowing a wad of cash on the most expensive dish on the menu, and then subsequently eating a fraction of it with the attitude “pfft, it’s only money going in the bin anyway”.
